Kid’s Camps-Special Needs Camps
Find the Right Experience for Your Child
Just because your child has special needs does not mean they cannot share in the camp experience and get many of the benefits that camp provides. Psychologists and educators have long believed that camp provides unique opportunities for personal growth and development not found elsewhere, including school programs. The nurturing and safe atmosphere at camp can help kids build self-esteem, self-confidence and independence. In a community with other campers, where the focus is on inclusiveness and effort, kids with special needs can find a place where they belong, and where they can discover and explore their talents and interests.
Special needs camps are available for children with any type of challenge, from developmental disabilities to visual impairment, from cancer to cerebral palsy to substance abuse. Many camps are specifically geared to provide opportunities to children with a particular need, such as learning disabilities or hearing impairment, but will accept kids with these conditions who have other challenges as well. There are camps for children of any age, and there are day camps as well as camps that involve overnight stays.
You may also be able to send your child to a camp that is not specifically for special needs children, as camps are required under the Americans With Disabilities Act to make reasonable accommodations to that children with special needs can participate.
